INSTALLATION OF THE YEAR –
RETICULATION CONTRACTOR OF THE YEAR

GENERAL

J Turner Electrical (Pty) Ltd was awarded two tenders for Quagga Centre, which were combined and executed simultaneously, namely: (1) Generator Upgrade (Value: R7 274 552.53 VAT Incl) and (2) Earth Wire Replacement (Value: R480 317.76). A JBCC Contract was entered into with Emira Property Fund (Main Contractor) and the Engineer, Schalk van der Merwe from Ballenden & Robb International (Principal Agent).

A dedicated team was on site who was under the management of a capable experienced project manager who worked closely with the engineer and other contractors.

We complied with the Occupational Health & Safety Act, 1993 (Act 85 of 1993) and had a fully inclusive Health & Safety file on site which complied in all areas (i.e. training, skills, etc.) Due to strict protocols and procedures, we can confirm that none of our staff members contracted Covid throughout the duration of the project. All materials used were SABS approved.

The site was cleaned on a daily basis and all waste materials were put in a large construction bin which was cleaned out timeously.

When installing the cables, new routes were found and this resulted in a massive saving on cables. With this saving we could install an extra plinth as well as the 2 motorized Circuit Breakers at the substation keeping within the budget.

The Engineer supplied us with a program and through proper management we were able to finish the project 2 weeks in advance.

With the site being in Pretoria, we were able to manage and control the project from our head office and thus there was no need for a site office.

PROJECT DETAIL

(1) EARTH WIRE REPLACEMENT

The Tender for the Earth Wire replacement consisted of replacing stolen Earth Wires with Kwena Earth Cable for each shop, throughout Quagga Shopping Centre. A total of 1 640 m Kwena Earth was installed ranging from 10mm Kwena Cable up to 150mm Kwena Cable.

The majority of the routes for this earthing ran through the shops and there were very few routes that ran in service ducts. You can imagine this was a job in itself as each shop had a run of Kwena. So just to get to one shop you had to run through about 6 or 7 shops. At the end of the day, we still had extremely happy shop owners who accommodated us.

(2) GENERATOR UPGRADE:

The Generator upgrade consisted of installing 3 x generators at Quagga Centre. The generators consisted of a 300 kVA, 630 kVA and 1250 kVA Generator. Each generator was connected separately at different areas at the Centre. The 300 kVA generator was connected from the Mains at a minisub via 5 x runs of 120mm x 4core ECC cable. The 630 kVA generator was connected from the Mains of a 1000 kVA Transformer at Sub 2 via 7 x runs of 120mm x 4core ECC cable. The 1 250 kVA generator was connected from the Mains of a 1 600 kVA Transformer at Sub 1 via 4 runs of 400mm single core cable. The total quantity of cable used was 400m of 400mm single core cable and 550m of 120mm x 4core ECC cable. The generators were procured from Unilec Power Systems in Bloemfontein.

Plinths had to be installed for each generator and for two generators ClearVu Fencing was installed. Each generator was connected separately after hours as to not disturb the trading of the Centre.

At 2 areas motorized Circuit Breakers supplying shops that already had generators had to be installed for their main switches supplying the shops. This was to ensure that their generator start up when there is a power failure and do not sense the power coming from our newly installed generators.

No material was lost or stolen due to proper stock control and security measures that were implemented, thus not causing any unnecessary financial loss to the Client.
